A Flame For The Fire

A Flame For The Fire, by Nigel Tranter:

"...but it was noteworthy to the Lowlanders that these Highland dignitaries had their own precedences and formalities, for it was only the three-feather men who advanced towards the king [James IV of Scotland], all chiefs of the name, no two-feathered chieftains venturing forward."  "But those who did made a resounding file: MacDonald of Dunivaig...and Cameron of Lochiel."

Archibald Douglas, 5th Earl of Angus, is portrayed early in this story as a rival for the King's favorite, Janet Kennedy (she with the flaming red hair).

Though King James the Fourth had children by Janet Kennedy and others, a political alliance was made when he married Margaret, daughter of the English King, Henry VII.  The book mentioned the arrival of the young princess.  An historical account stated:

"Lammermuir was the first stage that Queen Margaret made in her new country At Lamberton Kirk the Archbishop of Glasgow with a grand company of Scottish nobles were waiting to receive their Queen."
